Back-To-School Resolutions (AKA Fall Kick Start)

The back-to-school feeling isn’t just for kids.  After Labor Day, we’re all getting back into our routines, making resolutions to live simpler and smarter after lazy summers.  This week we’re sharing a few of our resolutions for kick starting the fall.

1.  Cook More
Yep, this has to be at the top of our list.  Something special happens when you cook from scratch.  Life slows down.  The kids hang out in the kitchen.  Couples turn the TV off.  And everyday life becomes just a little bit more magical.

2. Learn Something New
Remember when you wanted to take up knitting? Polish up your Spanish? Try your hand at pottery?  Make a plan so this will be the year you make it happen.

3. Brown Bag It
Ever add up how much you spend on lunch at the office each week?  Pretty scary, right?  Not to mention all those wasted calories and questionable nutrition.  This fall, resolve to pack your lunch the night before as you’re cleaning up dinner.  It’ll be ready for you in the morning without any extra clean up.  (Looking for inspiration? Meez salads are super fast, super easy and, of course, super delicious.)

4. Plan a Date Night, Or Friends Nigh
Unless it’s on the calendar it just doesn’t happen.  So schedule a date each month, book a sitter and make it happen.  This idea works perfectly with that group of friends, as well.

5.  Cook Once
Make one dinner for the family and enjoy the zen that comes with not having to heat, plan and clean up multiple meals.  Sound impossible?  Keep ingredients separate and mix them for each diner’s preferences.  Your son doesn’t like cauliflower? Serve his pasta with olive oil and his cauliflower on the side.  Husband cutting back on carbs? Give him an extra serving of veggies and go light on the noodles.  View dinner as building blocks that can be assembled in different ways.  And who knows? We’d bet you’ll see their tastes broadening as well.

6. Be A Tourist In Your Own City
We all know we live in an amazing city, but it’s easy to stick to our own beaten paths and miss some of the cool things tourists take in over a single visit. This fall, break out by visiting a new neighborhood, hitting a new site, taking corny tourist photos and maybe even joining a tour.  Schedule an expedition once a month and let us know what you discover!

7. Make Time To Exercise
After a lazy summer, find something that gets you excited to exercise and put it on your schedule.  Are you going to start biking to work? Scheduling a workout during lunch? Get up 30 minutes earlier?  Sign up for a new class with a friend?

8. Have Friends Over For a Weeknight Dinner
Rediscover the lost art of entertaining.  It doesn’t have to be a special occasion to have friends over.  Make a casual dinner, open a bottle of wine, and see how much fun catching up at home can be.

9. Simplify
After making all these dates and priorities, what’s the one thing on your list you can simplify? Do you need to chair 3 committees at your kids’ school? Do you really need to drive all over town looking for that one special thing?  Make time for the things that are important and find a way to say no to the ones that aren’t.
