A Dietitian’s  Top 6 Tips

With nutrition messages coming at us right and left, how do you focus?  Here are my top 6 tips for eating right and simplifying your life.

1) Eat more veggies! –One of the key recommendations of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines is to include a variety of vegetables from all of the subgroups – dark green, red and orange and legumes (beans and peas). This is less of a challenge when you order from Meez since entrees often include sweet potatoes or carrots, leafy greens and plenty of bean options. You will also see butternut squash, brussel sprouts, kale, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, arugula and many many more.

2) Try new funknownoods! – Sick of serving pasta or pizza every night? Try red rice, polenta, or udon noodles instead. Some other fun and tasty items you can find with Meez include wonton cups, thai kebobs, zucchini tacos and cauliflower couscous just to name a few.

3) Get your grains! – Whole grains are loaded with fiber, B vitamins, antioxidants, and trace minerals. They can also add protein to your diet.  Research has suggested that eating more whole grains can help you live longer http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/06/13/Eating-more-whole-grains-can-help-you-live-longer/4581465859930/  You can find a variety of different grains on the Meez menu each week. Farro is a new favorite in my house!

4) Eat less red meat! – There is evidence linking large consumption of red and processed meat to colon cancer. Instead of slapping a few burgers on the grill, try one of the many chicken or fish entrees offered by Meez. Have a salad for lunch instead of lunch meat.  Meez provides all the essentials to make a nutritious and filling salad – no chopping needed!

5) Eat more fish! – Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Fish is also packed with vitamins, nutrients and protein that can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice a week. Meez offers a fish entrée every week!

6) Eat more plant based proteins!  – Americans eat a lot of meat. According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, average intakes of meats and poultry are above recommendations in the Healthy U.S.-Style Eating Pattern for teen boys and adult men. Meez offers many dishes with tofu, and legumes as the protein source. You can always find a dish with peanuts, chickpeas, lentils, peas and beans to pack a punch of protein.

Bonus) Have more fun! – Meez takes the stress out of planning meals and preparing for meals. Everything you order arrives sliced, chopped and diced. Most menu items allow you to have a nutritious meal on the table in less than 30 minutes. Use that extra time to take a walk around the block after dinner or soak up some late afternoon sun.
